Volpone Jelois (Fr)
2013 grey gelding by Vol De Nuit ex Jenne Jelois (Fr) (My Risk (Fr))
A juvenile who did not put a foot wrong last season, running nine times and never being out of the first four. A game, genuine, tough little horse who always gives his best, it was great to see him get his head in front in battling fashion when winning at Taunton in December.
Although not winning again last season Volpone ran with credit on every start, twice running excellent races on the flat under Megan Nicholls.
Heading into this year the ultra likeable Volpone Jelois has options as to what path we will take with him. He could stick to hurdling or try his hand over fences, Volpone will no doubt continue to give his all and run honestly whatever we ask of him.
A smashing little horse who has given his syndicate many good days out and will continue to do so.
I loved his attitude when winning his final start in France and he has proved to be a versatile, tough and consistent horse who hasn’t been out of the first four in nine starts for us. He will continue to give his owners some great days out.
Volpone Jelois gained plenty of experience on the flat in France but he seemed to be running over a distance much shorter than ideal for much of that time. It was only on his final start in France he raced over further than 2100m when taking a big step up in distance to 3000m. He won the race at Deauville showing battling qualities, to hold off the challengers in the home straight. The race was won last year by Moabit who has since gone on to win 4 races from 6 starts over hurdles for Paul.
He is a half-brother to Hilton Jelois who was campaigned in a similar manner on the flat (finished 3rd to Moabit in that race last year) before going on to win over hurdles.
Volpone Jelois looks to have more to offer now that he will be hurdling and hopefully can follow in the footsteps of Moabit and Hilton Jelois in being successful in that sphere.

Charlie Gordon-Watson SAYS
Volpone Jelois has been very progressive on the flat in France having won four times this year. He’s a very good type of horse with scope and quality. All being well he will continue his upward curve with Paul.
