Coillte Lass (Ire)

2011 bay mare by Beneficial ex Black Mariah (Ire) (Bobs Return (Ire))

A wonderfully tough and honest mare who racked up a novice hurdling three timer last season, jumping well and simply out galloping her rivals.

Her highlight came on the 30th December when picking up the Eleven Thousand pound Listed Mares Novice hurdle at Taunton, a day where she was on the very top of her game and was not to be denied under an aggressive Sam Twiston-Davies ride.

She then went on to improve again to finish third behind one of the best mares around last season, the multiple grade one winning Vroum Vroum Mag at Doncaster.

Tough, sound and as genuine as they come with a good level of ability, there is plenty to like about Coillte Lass and it will be interesting to see how she progresses. Happily there is now an excellent programme for mares and it looks likely she will have plenty of opportunity to get her head in front again.

PAUL’S POINTERS

Having already had three runs in Irish point to points, Coillte Lass was ready to step into a novice hurdle when she came to us. She summered really nicely and made her mark in mare’s races straight away. A nice staying prospect for the year and with the ever increasing valuable mares race programme there should be some excellent opportunities for her to excel.

Coillte Lass made her debut in a Dromahane point to point maiden, a race that looked ultra competitive on paper, run in the fastest time of the day she was given an educational run and pulled up before getting tired late on.

In her next run in 2016 she was 2nd, where errors at the second last and last fence were her undoing, but her performance did not go unnoticed in the race analysis, it was noted that “she moved into contention in the style of a probable track winner”.

The promise she demonstrated was backed up and bettered a month later at Boulta when, in the largest field of runners on the day she displayed “a blistering turn of foot” to “surge clear in the last 50 yards” winning in good fashion.

Tom Malone SAYS

When I travelled to Cork to see Coillte Lass I immediately fell in love with her and had to buy her. I had looked at the footage of her racing and witnessed her acceleration in Dromahane it confirmed to me she was a mare with a bright future.
